Majuli Island - The Biggest River Island
Majuli is the largest river island in the world which is situated on the Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam. This island is made by the River Subansiri in the north and River Brahmaputra in the south. It’s been also called as the cultural capital of Assam. The Satra culture was established in Majuli by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva in the 16th century. The great social activist Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva established a new cult of Vaisnavism in Assam along with his great student Srimanta Madhabdeva. This place being pollution-free and covered by greenery on all sides is a Nature-friendly destination. The River Island has 22 Vaishnava Satras which were established during the 16th century. Bird watching is another attraction of Majuli that will attract tourists in a large number. The art of Mask-making has been a magnificent culture of Majuli satras. The Chamaguri Satra (Samaguri Satra) is the center of Majuli's famed, mask-making craft. Masks are designed to deliver out the character being acted in Bhaonas and Raas Utsav at Majuli. Mukha silpa of Majuli, it is a traditional art form which is now known at national and international level. Some major festivals of this island are Raas Utsav, Falgutsav, Bihu, Paal Naam, Ali Ai Ligang (Mishing), Bisu (Deori), Barsik Bhaona-Sabah/Bar Sabah, Bah-Gorowa, Garakshia Sabah etc. The months of September to March are the best time for planning a vacation at Majuli.
Umananda Island - Smallest River Island
“Umananda” is the smallest River Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River that flows through the city of Guwahati in Assam.
